The colors are actually little tiny flags from the country they are from. They are very patriotic. It's hard to see them exactly because they don't like to sit still too long so you can look....and if you even try to use a magnifying glass to get a better look they just fly, fly away....which is also how they got their name.

After reading EMAILSKIP's suggestion, I tried looking at a number of flies in my backyard on a bright sunny day with a big magnifying glass but they kept catching on fire! Does anyone know what cause flies to spontaneously combust when humans look at them?
