My school had it when I was little - it indicated that a person made an Effort, but still failed, as opposed to someone who Failed because they didn't try at all. An E looked a little better than an F but still didn't give you credit to advance.

Actually, I think in other countries there is an "E" ( at least for International Baccalaureate grades.)

If you are stuck in between D and F, you suck. You should be more concerned about getting As.
