can you breed a highland terrier and a pitbull, will there be any problems with the puppies

no never do this if the mother dog is smaller than daddy she can die while trying to give birth the puppies heads are usually to big for her to pass, i lost a dog that way she was a dashund trying to birth collies

No, you will want to breed dogs that are similar in size. The reason being - if there is too much of a size difference, the mother won't be able to give birth, and may die or (if caught by the vet) will need a C-section (expensive).
There are so many mixed breed dogs out there that are being euthanized because there are not enough homes for them, that there is no reason to bring any more mixed breed puppies into the world.

It depends on how much bigger the big dog is. If you want the puppies to be small you will want to have the male the smallest. If the female is the biggest one it doesn't matter.

Sure, just make sure the small dog is the male and be sure to get him a step ladder or have the female lay down to "get it"

Yes you could, you might need to do Artifical Insemination though.
