Someone pleas tell me if this is normal.........

When I do any cardio related exercise (treadmill, outside running, eliptical) my heart rate is usually anwhere from 185-200, and it only takes about a minute and a half for it to get that high. Plus I am not really trying to go fast or hard and I can only do that type of moderate activity for about 10 minutes, its just too hard. I noticed this about a year ago, but I've always had troubles with cardio workouts. Now I dont understand why its so high and why its so hard because I am in good shape, or at least I thought I was! This is more annoying than anything because I feel like im not getting any workout an it doesnt seem to be going down the more excerise I do.

And some background on me if it helps.....19, female, 5'4, 100 lbs, I dont smoke anymore, and I used to do cheer and gymnastics in high school so excercise is nothing new!

You max heart rate should be 200 (220 minus you age). It is no wonder that you can't last more than 10 minutes if you are working at your max heart rate. Try to lower the intensity/pace till you are working at about 80-85% of your max. At that level, you should be able to go on for about 25-30 minutes or more. This is to be done gradually. Once your stamina improves, you can try to extend the duration or your cardio or increase the intensity or both. If you are really very very fit, you should be able to work at above 90% of your max heart rate for 30-45 minutes.

But 2 things to remember: first, go get your blood pressure checked before engaging in intense cardio. Second, if you feel any chest pains or dizziness when doing your cardio, please stop IMMEDIATELY!

If your heart rate goes up to that, you are not in good shape at all. I don' t have the chart on the treadmill memorized, so I don't know what the maximum is for a 19 year old, but if you are over your maximum you need to stop.

My heart rate was 165 when I first started on the treadmill, even walking (I am twice your age). Now I can't get it past 120 even when I crank up the incline and increase the speed. That means my heart has gotten stronger and needs a more challenging workout to still give me a cardio workout.

I think you need to consult with a physician and get some baseline measurements so you know what is right for you and your situation.
