It's what we would call "Muscovado sugar" - unrefined sugar, which is much more moist than refined sugar and is usually dark in colour, although you can also buy "light muscovado sugar" which is paler and has a finer texture. It's very good to use in baking as it has a lot more flavour than refined sugar.
