I'm actually a big fan of Ebay when in comes to equipement, especially backdrops! There is one particular seller named 2DreamMaker that sells all sorts of lighting sets and backgrounds. The bids start at $0.99 but tend to rise quite a bit on the lighting and backdrop kits. I had a bidding war with 2 other people to get my lighting, and I still only paid $150 including shipping. Actual single muslins and canvases don't seem to rise too high, so you might actually get a really great bargain. As of right now, all my equipment except my camera is from ebay and I probably haven't spent more than $500 total.

There are tons of suppliers for various types of backgrounds

Denny Manufacturing (www.dennymfg.com) is a great supplier of backgrunds, props and supplies.

B&H Photo (www.bhphoto.com) offers a variety of photography supplies including muslin & canvas backgrounds.

Those are two of the biggest ones out there.

Ebay is another good place to find backgrounds and props.

I get my backgrounds locally (Northern Virginia) at a store called Penn Camera. Good prices. If you look in the back of any major photography magazine you can find many ads for them. Also, just search on shopping.yahoo.com. Mail order of paper instead of fabric might get expensive because they come in 10 foot long tubes.

depending on what type of background you want try using your fabric stores but avoid painting them at all costs as the paint cracks and flakes off unless it's been silk-screened try ebay or your local photography store and as said before maybe ask your local photographer

YOU CAN VISIT FABRIC STORES AND PAINT THEM, TALK TO ANY PORTARAIT STUDIO AND ASK WHO THEIR SUPPLIER IS.
