Checks and balances. That's why most laws don't get through Congress. If you read the letters written by the founders of the Constitution, they talk about factions and using them to make sure that small groups can block popularly supported action. Grid lock is talked about like it's bad today but our system was designed that way to protect people with opinions in the minority from the whims of the majority. That's why there are so many committees in Congress, so many ways to block a bill, and so few ways to pass one.

Well, that is the power of democracy. And in general, no there is not way to prevent popular ideas from being enforced, whether bad or not.
Save one exception, which applies in this particular case. Racism is prohibited by the 14th and 15th Amendments. So, while a platform of racism might be popular, they wouldn't be able to implement many of their plans under our current constitution.

In a so-called democratic society, it's the will of the people that counts. If the people want to elect a racist platform candidate, the so be it. I'm heading to Australia.

George Wallace did it in Alabama. He stood guard at the entrance of the university of Alabama to prevent blacks from going to school. Whit people voted him in as governor again. Then his wife ran with him as her chief adviser-she won. Then he found out blacks could vote, so he lied to them -they voted him into office again. He ran for president-was beating the sox off everyone-the government had to have him shot so he could not win. He did it all on race. At first-he was all white, and won, then he was all black, and won.
