mikemike6189: If that's why you won't read those books, then why the heck are you reading the part of Yahoo Answers devoted to religion and spirituality? Look, you either enjoy reading about religion or you don't. If you do, consider those two books.

noir: Who says atheists are not interested in scholarly studies of religion?

pcheesewhiz: No, you don't have to answer to me. But given that you chose to sign onto Yahoo answers and you chose to read my question and you chose to even respond to my question, the least you could do is come up with a valid answer.

I don't have to answer to you. I think you need help.

Nope but I may consider it. Consider this: Hero With a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0691017840/sr=8-1/qid=1155850634/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-1109675-7627963?ie=UTF8

It discusses mythology and approaches relgion from the same sociological frameworks as mythology. It's awesome!

No, I read a lot but have not gotten to many books that are out there. Right now I'm reading three (yes i do that i rotate books to keep things fresh) - Future Shock, The Sacred Canopy: Elements of A Sociological View of Religion and Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed.

I have written down the names of those and will look into them for future reading.

Organized religion is a scam to part people from their money. That does not mean God doesn't exist in some form. It's just that people exploit others' beliefs to get them to do what they want.

Islam and Judaism: religion masks a conflict over land rights.
Christianity: Pope has more money than Bill Gates.
Pentacostal: Reverend pretends to cry when talking about poor people just before collection plate is passed. Drives off in BMW after service is over.

Scams!

Nope, because I've never heard of them. I tend to read the Bible, specifically the New Jerusalem Translation, and Origin of the Species by Charles Darwin. I also like the Tao te Ching, the Koran, The Tibetan Book of the Dead...etc.

No, I no longer study the issue since nothing has changed since I became an atheist about 10 years ago.

I have probably read something similar during my quest for truth, but I can't say I read those books unless they were in print 30 years ago.

Read Religion Explained. Fascinating book. Its main premise is that our minds have a biological tendancy toward the believing in some sort of higher being.

Another good one is The End of Faith by Sam Harris. Definitely recommend it if you haven't read it yet. It was one of the most thought provoking books I have ever read.

Yes. I have a copy of the second one. Excellent book, which I have recommended to many.
Oh, and you might take a look at Breaking the Spell by Daniel Dennett.
