I'm not sure about nailing jello to a wall, I haven't tried that...
When my parents discipline me with punishments [no phone, no computer, and so on], it doesn't really work well enough to remind me not to commit my crime again. However, what really works for me is to really make me feel guilty. Not the kind of guilt where my parents say, "How could you? After all we've done for you?", but the kind where, "Why would you do that to me?" or "I'm just really disappointed." That makes me feel awful. If what I did was really bad, first they'll send me to my room, and then they come to make me feel guilty. They don't normally take away privileges, unless I did something really bad.
Make your kid feel guilty, but not in that really cheesy grown-up way.

Good description! If you try to give them advice, they know it all, and if they don't, their friends do !! They don't want to talk when they NEED to listen. Then my one daughter tells me one day, when she was 21, that I should of been more strict ! What can you do when they ignore you and keep on walking out the door, and will not answer their cell phone at night because they know its mom, and simply don't want to deal with me ! I wish I had some wonderful helpful advice, but all I can say is you can try to give advice, if they take it, or pray that they will be careful enough not to get in any serious trouble, and thank God when you hear the key in the door at night that their home safe and sound!

Not really. All you have to do is make it clear that your who gets the final say. They'll get mad at you, but will still love you, because your there looking out for them and they're glad to know that.

Yes! It's also like trying to force a round peg into a square one. I don't get it. They want to be treated like adults but clearly they don't act like one.
