do you believe in atoms even though you can't see them? Yeah, scientists say you exist, but why do YOU believe them?

Not trying to offend anyone...just trying to get a better perspective. Sorry if I am.

I believe in God, and your argument about atoms is not a good one. Because atoms can be observed and a rational person would see the physical evidence if they were allowed into the lab, microscopes, etc.

You can only believe in God if you have Faith. There is no proof.

I have witnessed atoms under electron microscopes. But, that does not address your question.

Empircal evidence (no such thing as proof) does not mean "seen through one or more of the senses". A theory predicts certain effects, and they are or are not observed. The electron has never been observed, but technologies based on the theory (like the microscope above) do work. I also believe that the earth revolves around the sun, even though I have never been to space to see it happen. The sun centered theory of the solar system is the simplest theory which accounts for all of the known data about the observed movement of the planets, etc. The idea of a creator is simply unnecessary to account for any currently verifiable data we have about the universe. The "theory" of God makes testible predictions, and they do not seem to stand up to scrutiny. No evidence.

Atoms can be seen and I prove that I exist by definition.

I guess you could look at the concept with probabilities, though. Sometimes you have to weight the information and evidence and make an informed decision. The evidence for atoms and me is abundant. The evidence for God is absent. So if I'm a betting girl, I'll put my money on the atoms, not God. Could I be wrong? We could all be wrong. But the probability is low.

Who said you cant see an atom? Have you no idea that scientists have been splitting atoms since the 50's? How do you think the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki worked?? ATOMIC BOMBS..... so, we KNOW they are real, we can see the "theory" of atoms at work in an explosion...

It is the beleiver's responsibility to prove that which he is alleging. It is not my responsibility to prove God doesnt exist, it is your responsibility to prove that he does. A big shiny book doesnt count as proof - I have one called Harry Potter and the Scorcerer's Stone, and it says Wizards can fly on broomsticks....is that the truth?

Isn't that cute? Chrisitan logic. Always amusing.
Look, let me set you straight about something, the burden of proof rests upon YOU to prove the existence of god.
YOU are the one that says it exists, therefore YOU must prove it exists.
For example,If I were to tell you that I had, in my backyard, a magic blue squirrel that did'nt walk but floated and spat out diamonds on the hour, every hour, would you believe me?
No, of course not, only a complete moron would.
You would, as any reasonable person would, want to see some proof. And even my producing a diamond wouldn't be adequate proof would it? You'd want to see the Squirrel wouldn't you? And not only would you insist on seeing him, you'd want to inspect for wires and other such tricks that made him "float". You'd probably also want to check his hair to see if the blue color was just paint or a dye.
All of these things would be necessarry in order to convince yourself that this isn't a hoax.
Now, we both know that this squirrel doesn't exist. But for some reason, only one of us knows that god doesn't exist. Why is that?
Ignorance? Lack of education? Brainwashing?
A bit of all three actually.
So that's all that we're asking of you, you say this god of yours exists. Then prove it. Let me see the diamonds, let me check for wires and blue dye.
Until you can do that, we will know that it is a lie.

There is a lot more proof for the existance of atoms than there is for the existance of a god.

That makes sense, if you did prove a god people would be more apt to believe in it. As it stands there is no proof for many superstitions and silly beliefs, and no reason to believe in them simply because people say you should.

You can't see air either, but you can see it's effect on other things.

Scientists have empirical evidence of atoms... theologians don't have evidence of god.

It's faith because it needs no proof or supporting evidence.

It's science because it has a mass of evidence, and has not been disproved.

Important distinction: Science is open to revision when new information is revealed. Religion is based on an unchanging dogma.

It just doesn't make any sense. Atoms, and my existence DO make sense. I have a brain, and it's a functional one, and I can't find any logical reason to believe in any space-ghost.

Scientists are merely observers of reality. Science is observation of reality.

I don't think I've ever heard anybosy say that they didn't believe in god because they "... can't prove him." I've heard plenty of people say they don't believe in god because they don't find sufficient reason to think that such a being exists. There is a big difference.

What kinds of reason's convince you of god's existence?:

*  a universe in which all that exists are the earth and heaven?
*  solid 'firmament' structure (the sky) separating the earth from heaven (terrarium earth)?
*  talking snakes (with legs) and donkeys?
*  shepherd staff turning into an asp?
*  demons chased out of people and into pigs?
*  friendly spirits?
*  evil spirits?
*  walking on water?
*  multiplying loaves and fishes?
*  food falling from the sky?
*  conception by a ghost?
*  people raising from the dead?
*  the sun stopping in its tracks?
*  parting seas?
*  people being bodily sucked up into heaven (which, by the way, lies on the 'other side' of the sky)?
*  world-wide flood that drowned the earth to a depth of 40 feet above the tallest mountain?
*  creating people from dust bunnies and ribs?
*  magical tree of knowledge?
*  god speaking from a burning bush?
*  ritual cannibalism, by eating god in the form of a cracker?
