The religion bashing, that is. Some silly boy asked us to convince him that being gay is ok. One lovely character responded with "sorry, but the bible says it's bad." Full stop, end of story.

So my question is - just because it's in the bible, it's ok, even if it's horrific, mean, rude, hostile, nonsensical, etc.? Really and truly, that makes it all ok?

No, it doesn't make it ok.

But it is impossible to tell a christian that. The bible means just stop thinking the bible has done the thinking for you. And many people dislike thinking at all, so it becomes a crutch to lean on when the world starts getting to complicated.

The bible was written during simpler times, and when human life had little value. There was a high rate of death, from childbirth to accidents to war were one could not get up in the morning without wondering if they would see their bed again, or their families.

There was no concept of valuing your life or the lives of your family, it saved pain just to lie down and die. Having rules to live by made life that much more simpler and saved time so that you could spend most of the day working in the fields raising food and harvesting it.

No, just because it is in the Bible doesn't make it true. You have to read the Bible as you do any book and understand the context in which the words are written and the time when they were written.

As far as sexual nature is concerned, that is the boy's choice, though it sounds like he'll have a rough road ahead. Whatever he chooses for his own life, he still deserves to be treated with tolerance and charity, as Jesus taught.

What people do in their own lives is their own prerogative. If a person decides that he/she likes the same sex, then so be it. Anyone, supreme being or not, telling anybody else that what they truly feel is wrong is wrong in itself. People feel and believe what they want for circumstances that cannot all be described in one single book. Some religions tell them that they cannot eat certain foods or drink certain liquids. Why is this when their creator placed them on his/her earth? Here is the way that I feel, if the creator made certain things possible, as long as you are not negatively affecting others irresponsibly, than feel free to do as you please. Once negativity is born from your actions, you have done yourself and humanity a disservice.

What makes it okay is that its a standard of Holiness, which only applies to those who follow the Living God. If one doesn't, then it doesn't really apply.

how do you define right from wrong? morals come from somewhere. and that is a highly debatable topic, because people say killing is wrong even according to the Bible, yet God commanded people to kill. (samson killed the philistines, moses killed the soldiers that were followign him when he parted the sea, God commands abraham to kill his son (even though he doesnt fully go through with it). so i guess it makes it ok if God tells you to...
