I can't believe the amount of bad grammar and typos prevalent on the internet!!

You would think that people would appear BETTER, because all one really has to do is type something in Word and spellcheck it!

I think people are just lazy.

Of course using a PC and the net do not "make" people have bad grammar (and spelling)...they simply choose to use poor writing skills or are too lazy to use spell check and don't (or didn't) pay attention in school.

When speaking it can be less evident, but people do not realize how much of themselves they give away through the written word...and how, when it is apparent they don't care how they come across online, it can be difficult for others to take them seriously with a post full of barely readable words, netspeak, and no punctuation.

As for books, I still read many. I'd much rather lie in bed and read, than try to read a book online or any great amount of text on the computer screen. It's hard on the eyes...and I can assume a more comfortable posture when reclining in bed.

The Internet promotes extremely poor usage of the English language. Microsoft Windows and other word processing software programs give suggested spellings in their spelling checking options, but people have to know the rules of grammar, word usage and spelling to know which option is right (British English, American English or any other form of the language).

Yes, I have read a regular book lately.

I don't think it's all the computer's fault. People are still free to do what they like, and if they decide not to care about grammar, they'll do it with a pen and paper or on a keyboard.

As for the disappearance of real paper books, I don't think it'll happen anytime soon. And if it does, I hope it happens only after I die myself, because I couldn't live in a world where I cannot open a new book, hear it's wonderful new creaking sound, smell its pages, use an actual bookmark...

The computer or the internet have nothing to do with the way you use your language. The only thing that makes a person have a bad grammar is his/her poor knowledge of grammar. Same thing with writing in general.
