He has been smoking for like a year now, so he might be addicted already, I'm not sure. I have tried talking to him before but without any luck, obviously.

First, how old is he? Did he start because of the friends he hangs out with? What kind of kids are they?

Sounds like peer pressure. If it is, try to talk to him about why he likes his friends. Point out to him that he does have choices and doesn't have to stay around friends who smoke, because possibly they'll start doing other things that aren't so wise, and does he really want to continue w/that path?

Put into his head the idea that he can be a leader, and not a follower and that he has the opportunity to change and improve. Also, if he ever were to see a tobacco-damaged lung, he might think again (could probably see one somewhere, either online or at a science class somewhere).

Okay, this probably won't make him stop, but when my family would find cigarettes that my dad had hid in the car or something (lets just say he's quite lots of times), we'd spray perfume in them, and put them back in the hiding place. They'd end up tasting disgusting, and he'd know he was caught.

Okay - don't do that if you don't have the kind of relationship where it's okay to play pranks on each other.
