Philly is the most common branded cream cheese: you can also get lower fat versions, which may be called 'curd cheese' instead. 'Quark' is very low fat indeed, but a bit bland. I've used fromage frais as a substitute in some sweet dishes and sauces with ok results. (Sour cream is a completely different product: for a start it's runny!)

There are a variety of alternative products now, there is marscapone, fromage fraise, quark and some french and german types that I forget their names.
To me quark has always been bland from supermarkets or specialists, now just bought some german quark from Lidl's and found it is flavoured with fruit and tastes wonderful like yoghurt.
So in England the main one people call is Philidelphia cream cheese, or Philly but there are also different countries cream cheese coming in now all called different from their countries.
Have I mentioned cottage cheese? curd cheese? sour cheese?
