I've posted before if it was okay for the mother to leave her 3 day old pups for a stretch or so. Well, I've kept tracked yesterday and the pups need to feed every hour or so. The vet told me to help out bottle feeding them because the 3rd and 4th born are smaller than the first two but the pups seem to know the difference between the mom's milk and bottle... they wont bottle feed. So every time they're hungry i'd just grab the mom and put her back in the kennel.

Well, my thing is, the whole 24hrs she stayed with the pups and didnt leave. the next day i let her out she'd quickly go back in --usually when the pups cry the mom would go to them. Then yesterday she seem to like her freedom more than them? Its like she would rather lay on the couch and sleep on the couch than to sleep with her pups. Whats going on???

Her milk sack is pretty pink but are the veins suppose to be a dark color? Almost purplish? They look like its turning into spider viens?

She may be having difficulties being a first time mommy. It really is ok for her to be gone for a while but with pups under a week old she shouldn't want to be away for more than 30mins to an hour at most. At their age, unless she is gone willingly for more than 3 hours it isn't an emergency, but it can be a sign of other problems. She might be sore from feeding or having other problems...

If she is unwilling to nurse them for 3 hours that constitutes an emergency and you need to bottle feed and probably take them to the vet if you are unexperienced (they might need tube fed if they refuse the bottle)

If you are forcing her to stay with the puppies that might be a problem as well. She might just not know what to do with them, it could be any number of things. Take her in (against her will) every 1-2 hours and try to relax her when they nurse. Don't try to force her to stay with the puppies unless she is leaving and not returning to check on them... again, if she won't nurse for 3 hours that is an emergency... until then try to relax and talk to your vet about what is best...

If she doesn't want to feed them, I would try bottle feeding again. If they refuse the bottle, lay her with the puppies and stay with her. We breed dogs also, and when the mom won't stay with them, I sit beside her the whole time to make sure they eat. You need to make sure they are eating at least every couple of hours. I would not recommend locking her in with the pups. She could suffocate them on accident. If these things do not work, you need to contact your vet again and let him know. Also, make sure they stay warm. The first week is critical because if they get cold, they will die. GOOD LUCK!!!

your dog does not like being a mom, i advise you get he spayed once the pups are weened so this doesn't happen again. Continue to try bottle feeding them, they will take to the bottle once they are hungry. But you should also make her stay with the pups every couple of hours to help with feeding them, then let her relax until they need to be fed again.

OK i am a vet don't worry what u do is take her to a real vet take the puppy's with u... if the sack ids pink and the veins r dark it means that u haven't been feeding her much and worrying about the baby's more see the milk comes from eating takes how women produce milk

It's possible that she's just not very maternal but I would have her checked by the vet if she was my dog to find out what's going on with her. This is not normal when the pups are this young.

sounds like she is getting engorged with milk the puppies need to nurse more often if not she may get mastitis and that is a vet bill you dont want plus bottle feeding the puppies round the clock wether they or you like it or not,YOU HAVE TO MAKE HER STAY WITH THEM,wether she likes it or not keep her in the kennel with them,if you have to only let her out for a bit of exercise and to relieve herself until she realizes this is her job and they are her responsibility, she doesn't want to feed them right now because they arent feeding enough for her milk supply her engorged teats hurt to have them nurse but you have to make her do it,make her stay with them until they get older then she can have more freedom,i know it doesn't feel right and feels like animal cruelty when you know she really just wants to be out of her kennel but she has to feed those babies more before she gets mastitis,or at the very least her milk dries up,sometimes being a mother isn't an automatic thing for a dog sometimes they have to be taught just like a human

You should talk to your vet and leave the mother locked in the same room as the pups.

You should talk to your vet. Sounds like you might want to lock her in a room with them. If it's just the veins turning color, it MAY be nothing, but check her nipples. If they are getting hard or swelling...call your vet immediately, she may be developing an infection. Either way, I would recommend calling your vet...they may want to see her to make sure she's feeling ok.
