Steven S: Why would I need to define the word "Spirit" to someone attracted to a question and answer forum on the topic of spirituality?

I honestly don't know and that is the best answer I can give. As a separate part of myself I have trouble seeing that but in the same vein I think I tend to be more spiritual about certain subjects. At this point I leave that open and undecided.

An atheist that believes in a spirit becomes a theist.

However, it is rather silly for such an "intellectual" person such as an Atheist to not be able to describe spiritual things, and instead of trying to come up with their own description they just say "Well science can't figure it out, and it's not advanced enough to come up with a solution, therefore it is something that I cannot think about at this moment."

Hmm.. things that can't be described scientifically...

Out-of body experiences, "don't exist" for atheists (though they happen, if it ever happens to an atheist he's no longer an atheist, he becomes theist.)

Manipulating energy through using energy - such as Prayer for Christians or Casting for Wicca - doesn't exist, because science can't prove that the mind is capable of moving energy forward and receiving energy. Though, people have palpable results when they truly believe.

One thing I do find funny about atheists - is that they are more quickly able to believe in Aliens - because "logically they would exist in an infinite universe" - but they forget that so many things about the world are based on unproven facts - such as, we don't know if the universe really is infinite or not, we only assume.

They have faith in science, although honestly - faith itself is a funny thing when it's not a self-grown item. Why have faith in the Bible OR the "proof of Science" unless you have your PhD in Theology or PhD in Physics?

I guarantee most atheists in yahoo answers are not either, and therefore, have some sort of faith on "scientists" (the preachers of Science) - because they can't prove to THEMSELVES what *they see.* They only read it and assume it's correct because a Scientists said so.

/rolls eyes

Atheism and Christianity are both blind. Findindg your own path is the way to go.

Dear oh dear, you are suffering in mental pain. How many times do you have to be told? Science has already shown that religious people suffer from mental illness and they they are predisposed to a "spiritual or religious" gene. Many Atheists and scientists believe that religious people have a mental genetic problem. Is that too difficult to understand?

Scientists will soon explain why some people are religious and believe in God, and why there’s so much trouble caused in the world by religion. Scientists have already shown that some people carry a "warrior" gene that makes them more prone to violence and criminal acts.

Some people are genetically predisposed to violence and criminal acts, and I believe scientists have also found that some people are genetically predisposed to religious or spiritual acts, but have yet to publish their full findings to avoid a public uproar.

Scientists may well discover that people who are predisposed to the “religious or spiritual” gene are probably more likely to also be predisposed to the “warrior” gene, which would ultimately cause these people to have religious conflicts like crusades and wars. It is already a well known fact that religion is responsible for the majority of wars, conflict and murder of innocent life since humanity began.

Religious people do not understand the question “why” and so God, Religion, the Bible, or whatever, takes over and controls their mind. The trouble with this solution, unlike science, is that anything can be twisted into whatever you wish to believe and therefore is always right. Sadly to say, that’s irrational thought.

However, there must be a rational explanation why religious people act in such an irrational manner, and I think scientists will prove in the near future that it’s all a function of genetic disposition.

No, atheists do not believe in any form of spiritual, religious or higher destiny. They believe we are born from biological reation and our bodies simply die when they give out or are shut off like a switch. They do not believe in an afterlife, a soul or spirit, they don't believe in ghosts or goblins. They don't believe in any supernatural power.
Nothing.

Do you get that?

Now leave them alone and stop trying to convert them.

It's the AGNOSTICS who are confused, who want to believe but are skeptical of what they cannot see or touch. Agnostics aren't willing to say there is no God or spirit, they just keep an open mind that they may infact be wrong...but so may everyone else.

The only spirit I believe in comes in a bottle. Seriously, there's absolutely no need to believe in any of this ridiculous nonsense. The only useful thing in the bible was Paul's statement to the effect that "when I ceased to be a child, I gave up childish things." Religious or spiritual beliefs are about as childish as you can get.

NO! it's all the same paranormal bullsh*t. If we believe in spirits, wouldn't that shatter our whole basis of being an atheist? And doesn't the saying go, "In name of the son, the father and the holy SPIRIT"? I don't think plants have a spirit nor do I believe in ghosts or any other phenomena. It's all just plain silly.

Just like God, the spirit is a mental concept. So no, I don't believe in Spirit. But if it comforts you, go for it. We frail humans are very afraid of being alone in a great big universe, which we in fact are. Thus, gods, ideologies, and religions. And everyone killing everyone else over same.

I believe in existences in other places, in other realms, other universes, I don't believe there are any who have contact with this realm, much less making and controlling it. There just isn't anything sustantial to prove it.

I have no proof we have a spirit which leaves our flesh, so at this point, with the evidence I on hand, I'm not expecting to have an afterlife. I will gladly take one if there is as long as it's not the eternal torture gig.

The spirit as a figurative thing I'm sure most atheists would probably understand...the concept of a literal entity called your spirit, a true Atheist may or may not accept.
A supreme power called a spirit...now that....Atheists would not accept.

A spirit is an abstract idea like "love" or "harmony."

It's a bi-product of physical activity caused by motion and time: motion being a brain coagulation over a certain period of time to form the concept or thought associative to ego which eventually led to the egotistical idea of a "spirit."

When multiple cells form a single being, there's a tendency for these cells to assume that they aren't single cells, but rather a single entity.

Anyone with common sense realizes this flaw.
