I think you mean the first war of the 20th century. Apart from women who were in the resistance during the Second World War and women in the support units (e.g. medical units), the Soviets did wide use of women in combat. Not only female snipers, but the Soviet Air Force created a fighter wing formed by female units. Women have died in actual combat since before the mists of recorded time. There were women who dressed as men to be soldiers who died in the US Revolutionary and Civil Wars.

There is evidence that Scythian women fought as equals with the men about 800-300 BC. and reports of some women having there right breast removed to help with archery.

That would be a long long time ago .. it was not at all uncommon for Viking women to war and it was not unheard of in early Greece.

Probably WWI and WWII the Germans and Russians used women as snipers or medics sometimes.

I imagine this is a pre-history occurrence. It's not provable, but I would bet money on pre-Sumerian times.
