So many questions come to mind -- will you be working there? Will you have other income while you are there? What arrangements have been made as to your liability for taxes to the Italian government? You should make an appointment with an advisor who is familiar with the rules applicable to Americans abroad. Or you can start with the IRS publication on the subject at the link below.

OK you have two basic alternatives.

1. Get the forms from the IRS on line, complete them on your own and mail to the US.
2. Contact one of the major accounting firms. They have offices everywhere. Names like Earnst & Young, KPMG, will be in the phone books in major cities. They will help for a fee.

The other approach is to go to an H&R block office before you leave. Expalin your problem and perhaps they will do what you need or point you in a bette rdirection than teh pricey alternative I gave you above.

Don't forget that you may have a tax liability in Italy as well and you may need local help to do that and integrate it wilth your US tax return.

If you expect a refund you can wait until you get back. No penalties or interest if you get a refund.
