I prefer Care Credit http://www.carecredit.com/practices/veterinary/
to insurance, as i believe it saves money in the long run, and is the safely net needed for emergent care. It is a no interest credit card, just for veterinary care, and allows up to 18 months to repay..You can apply on line, and know if you are approved in minutes. All it requires is a steady income from any source. .. I checked out the clinics that accept in in my state, and ALL of them do..You can check out your state for vets that accept the card, right on the site.
All of the insurance programs just refund payments as you make them..you send them the receipt, and they send you check for the vet care, minus the deductible, so you still have to have the money up front.

If you prefer to not apply on line, your vet's office will have the forms for you to fill out for Care Credit.

Pet insurance is always a good idea if you don't think you can save up enough to cover every potential emergency. When I was working at a vet clinic, we saw several animals who would have lived if their owners had insurance or had saved up. I would recommend at least emergency coverage...major illness, accidents/injuries, etc. Even at an inexpensive vet, emergencies can run into the $1000 plus range very quickly. I would ask your vet if there's a company they recommend. Also, look at what some of the companies offer, and just start comparing costs vs benefits. Also, look for one with geriatric/senior pet benefits. Your older dog is getting to the age that problems may start to develop more often. Your vet may even be able to recommend what benefits you would most likely want to have.

Our dog is insured with Pets Best and I'm actually amazed at how much better I feel just knowing that if something big happens (an accident, cancer, something with a huge vet bill) that we're not alone trying to cover it. I also found it helpful to google several companies along with the word "review" to find out what others were saying about the different options. Good luck to you!

VPI is one of the best out there....
http://www.petinsurance.com

Keep in mind that all major current pet insurance programs are reimbursement programs. You have to front the costs and they repay you. VPI generally has rapid claims and is a pretty easy company to deal with... but they are an insurance company, remember that.
