It wouldn't necessarily reduce the weight, and it would definitely increase the cost. Would you like to pay $50,000 for an 'economy' car?
BTW steels of all types are alloys.

If safety is a concern, why not drive a tank? I think the real question is, Are alloys as strong or stronger than steal? Can some thing weight less and be strong at the same time? Price may be a concern. Aluminum is the 3rd most abudant element on Earth. 2nd -Silicon, 1st - Oxygen. Put the process to make alloys might be expensive at this time.

And what alloy is as cheap and strong as steel? You want a tin can for a unibody or truck frame when you get in an auto accident?

If I'm not mistaken, weren't cars made more durable years ago? I think more cars survived crashes back then than they do now. Now they're building for the safety of the drivers and passengers. Although the cars crumble from the slightest bang, the drivers are more safe.

It's got nothing to do with steel unions. it's because it's stronger and cheaper. The soda cans are aluminum because glass will break, long ago they were are glass.
