in the church once they have taken the Bride's bouquet? (I have just been informed it's the latter in the Wedding Rehearsal, but I'm not sure that's right.)

Just got married. Depends on where your getting married, type of ceremony and basically the person who's conducting the service but I think the general idea is that they stand next to the Bride (like the Best Man stands next to the Groom) so that she's there to assist and fluff dresses and wipe tears 'cos that's what a bridesmaids meant to be doing not just looking pretty and all that (sometimes Bridesmaids forget that).

There are no hard & fast rules for this.
But usually, at least, the MOH & Bman stand with the couple throughout the ceremony. What you want the others to do is up to you. But if you have young children participating, please allow them to sit after they walk in. It's long to an adult sometimes; can you imagine how a child feels?!

And let your officiant worry about what goes on during the rehearsal. You should discuss what you want with him/her & he will help you accomplish just that.

My chief bridesmaid stood up throughout our ceremony, our vicar asked her if she would as it was what they did when we got married 22 years ago, I have been to wedding were some of the bridesmaids stand and some of them sit, guess it depends on the church or vicar really.

They usually sit down or stand off to the sides. After all when you take your vows - the only important people are the bride and groom.

Depends on the kind of ceremony. I know in that in my aunts' weddings (Catholic), everyone sat because it was over an hour. However in Protestant and JOP ceremonies which can be 10 minutes or less, you normally stand. It depends on the minister and the bride.

well, in a traditional christian wedding ceremony the maid of honor stands by the bride the whole ceremony, and walks out of the church after her.

I've been to weddings where they do both. In protestant weddings, it is generally standing. In Catholic and longer ceremonies, the party sits.

You should be the focus of the attention, so it makes sense to me that they should sit. That's how my wedding is.

the bridesmaids stand behind the bride, however it is totally up too you of what you want. Weddings today have become so non traditional. Do what you see fit.
