Harry Potter is obvious but my son loved "My Side of the Mountain", not sure of the author. It's about a boy who more or less runs away to live in the Canadian mountains and conduct nature experiments for the summer. It is an older book (probably at least 30 years) but really magical.

My son also adored the Redwall series, lots of books by Brian Jacques. All about animals as people in medevial times, etc. Brilliant and lots of them (I think about 16 so far), there's a website and a PBS show about the series.

How great to encourage a child to read!

I read Old Man and the Sea by Earnest Hemmingway when I was 10. It has a sort of sad ending but even then I knew it was incredibly well written. It was a real page turner, I felt compelled to finish the book. It had a huge effect on my writing style... that you don't need to be overly verbose to write well. Might be too much for some 12 y.o.'s, you be the judge...

Harry Potter and the Series of Unfortunate Events!

Madeline L'Engle - A Wrinkle In Time, and all her other books. They are magical.

Totally agree on Harry Potter, although the latest ones are a bit violent and intense with character death and angst.

Mark Twain books are always good, too.
