I am returning to running again after an injury last summer and a year layoff. I'd like to build up my stamina and maybe get up to being able to run 3-4 miles a day.

What's the best way to build stamina? run a bit then walk and then run and walk and so on? or run as much as possible non-stop and try to go a little further each day?

Thanks!

Thanks---I'm looking to build stamina in running. Not overall stamina.

I've found that varying your workout is the most effective method. For example: On Monday, Wednesday and Friday, do distance runs where you go as far as you're comfortable with (hopefully that increases with time). On Tuesday and Thursday, go shorter distances, but at a faster pace. Not sprinting, but as fast as you can comfortably go. Alternating like this improved my 5K time by about three minutes when all was said and done.

From my experience, running and walking in bursts is an easy way to pull a muscle.

I really think interval training such as you mentioned (run, then walk, then run again) is probably the best way to build stamina. However, I'm not a runner, so have no first hand experience. Good luck! :)

Run and walk. Cycling is also a lesser impact activity.

Be patient and try to do something that will deal you a setback. Forward progress only.
