He is a very 'sensible' 3 year old, but we are not sure!!

He sleeps through without getting up- doesn't even get out of his normal bed in the morning until he has our attention (by shouting MUMMY! DADDY!) and we go in to him! We have a 3 bedroom house and want to put him and his sister into a room together, and it is rather tight on space. We have searched for low-level bunks, to no avail! Thanks for all the answers (and we are v responsible parents, honest!!)

I know it is hard when you are trying to make the most out of what you got and not having enough space is a tricky one but believe me when I tell you do not even consider letting your little one sleep in the top bunk, nothing might ever happen but you just never know. My friend had a little girl five yrs old she fell out out the top bunk mum went in to check on her she was ok so she put her back to bed got up next morning and the child was in a comma never recovered. just think long and hard before you make any decisions please I have found this site for you to look at please do look at it it is very informative.

Yes a 3 year old is a bit to little to be placed on the top bunk of a set of bunkbeds. If was you, I would wait untill the child was at lest 5 years old. Some 3 year olds still have a soft spot on the top of their heads. So if the child was to fall off the top bunk it could hurt the child in way you would not like to happen.

It would be a bit risky as the 3 year old could wake up in the middle of the night and try to get out for any reason or may fall out accidentally (even with railings) - i would not put my three year old on a top bunk bed.

Yes, he is way to young. It doesn't matter how sensible he is; he is too small and when asleep or drowsy all sorts could happen. He should be at least 6 years old. It normally states a minimum age on the beds when you get them. When we got ours I remember that it said 6 years.
It really isn't worth the risk. I know they love them and can't wait to sleep in the top but you would feel SOOOOO bad if something happened to him.

It depends very much on your son, and also on his abilities, I put my son then 3 1/2 into a low cabin bed, that is a high as my waist, (I'm 5' 8"), but he was very agile and sensible. I was as nervous as hell, I put alsorts of padding on the floor just in case, he has never fallen out and is now 8. I think a top bunk is too high, maybe better to wait abit, you will never forgive yourself if he hurt himself.

hi i would think he is a bit to young even if they are sensible...you see it is a long way down for them to fall at that age it is the same as us falling 20 feet.so id say no. try and get him to sleep in a bed its the best answer and besides they say kids should be at least 6 to sleep in a top or bottom bunk..hope this helps.

yes, a 3 yr old is way to young. A child should be able to get up and crawl out with out getting hurt. A 3 year old would have to really concentrate to climb up. I would wait until at least 5. Then it would depend on the child.

I think the general rule to follow would be, if the child can climb up and down from the bunk bed safely they can sleep there. I can't imagine a three year old can "safely" make the climb.

No I wouldn't risk it. Too many accidents happen in bunk beds and it is recommended a child is 6 years old before you let him/her sleep in one. When I first had our bunk beds I separated them until my boys were old enough. Better to be safe than sorry.

my son is three and he still sometimes falls out of his bed, so i personally wouldn't put him in a bunk bed. bunk beds usually have guards at the side, so that would stop his fall, but he might fall trying to climb down in the middle of the night if he is still half asleep.... personally, I'd wait a little longer.
