there are so many ab exercises you can try: crunch, side crunch, sit up, v up, leg lift, hip lift, plank, side plank, boat. it's always good to switch it up so that your muscles don't adapt and stop responding to your workouts. but the true determinant is how low your body fat is. it takes seriously low body fat to show 12 packs. and unless you have superior genetics, the only way to get there is to put yourself on a superstrict, low fat and bad carb diet (some cardio won't hurt either). some people would even keep good carbs to a min in order to get there. and just as a warning, most people who do get that look don't maintain it long term. most people might be able to attain the look for a competition or photo shoot with diet plus other little tricks like dehydrating, cutting out salt, etc., but won't look like that on an average day. i don't mean to imply that you can't do it. you can if you really want to, just know that it's not just a matter of exercising. diet is key to getting you lean enough to show all the detail in your abs.

You run down to your local store, lift up the 12 pack out of the cooler, walk to the cashier to pay, run back home, strecth out to prevent injury and to let the beer settle from running with it, after pop one open and begin to do the 12oz. curl.
