I was in Kroger yesterday and I walked up to the self-checkouts behind a lady and another lady (that I didn't see previously) hollered and said "Excuse me, but I was in line before you", I apologized and told her I didn't see her and then two registers opened up and she promptly jumped in front of the lady in front of me that was next and I said loud enough for the hag to hear me " I guess she couldn't figure out what register she wanted."

I know the hag heard me!

Technically, you were both rude, but she was rude twice.

She was very rude and probably was not in front of you to begin with. There really is not anything that you said that could be seen as insulting.
Stating that she didn't know which register she wants is only an observation; however, had you said it in a snide or nasty way, it would have been rude. Many would have said much worse. If people don't speak up, these cretins continue to annoy the shoppers who are polite to one another. If someone said something out loud every time she broke the rules, (I surmise she breaks them every time), she would stop. The rest of us who hear someone state a fact, without malice, in these situations appreciate it.

She probably was rude, but then so was your comment. It never works to bend to their level. I find it is more annoying to them to be overly sweetly polite. Someone flips me off? I smile and wave or blow kisses at them. They get madder whilst I go my merry way. Someone not use their blinker and you catch up with them? Call out, Hey I see your cars blinkers don't work--maybe you should have a mechanic check that! Someone talking loudly, or kids running in a restaurant? Ask to move, or say to the hostess--I am afraid one of those kids is going to get hurt!! The stress is not worth it. The public is rude. But stooping to their level doesn't correct the problem. Try to lead by example.

Yes, she was rude, and hypocritical--it's not okay for someone to cut in front of her, but it's okay for her to cut in front of someone else?!

And you don't have to call her a hag.

Yes, she was rude, but let it go. It is not healthy to stress yourself out.

Yeah, she was rude. But, see, I'm the type of person who would've called her on it, too. :)
