Why does my hair stand on end?

Whenever I get scared, my hair stand on end. What going on up there?

When you get scared electrochemical impulses are sent through your nervous system to tell the hairs to stand up. It's similar to the effect of static electricity on the hair in those science experiments when a person rubs a balloon on their hair and it stands up.
