It depends on what her intrests are. My two year old little girl loves Dora the Explorer, so when she got dora toys for her birthday, she carried them around the rest of the party. A vhs or dvd of her favorite cartoon or show would be a good idea too. Ebay and half.com sell these much cheaper than you can find at wal-mart, etc.
Most two year old little girls like anything associated with dolls (babies). My daughter likes getting doll accessories such as strollers, carseats, diaper bags, bottles...etc.
Not to sound cheap, but you can find awesome stuff at dollar stores! You can find princess wands, dress up shoes, and crowns for like a dollar a piece....those items are usually a big hit.
Other gifts:
bath toys, bath paint.
coloring book, non toxic crayons or color wonder paper and color wonder finger paint.
hair bows, ribbons, headbands...etc
or a gift card :)

toys or, if she is anything like my neice was at the age of 2...clothes!!! my neice has been a fashion diva since birth!
i got her a view finder around 2 or 3 and she LOVED it!
i got her viewer and then a whole bunch of cartridges.
a view finder isn't too much, though, so throw in maybe a gift card, too. that way you got her something she can play with, but you got her something they can use to get her something she may need.
the gift card is great b/c it sounds like you may not know the little girl all that well...which, is fine....just a thought:)
oh and be sure to check with mom or dad about her sizes if you go with clothes. i love gymboree, target and old navy for kid's clothes!!
take care.

2 year olds are just really discovering coloring. A nice pack of Jumbo (so they don't break) Washable (for mom and dad) Crayons and a coloring book that is geared towards something she has interest in.

Veggietales and Little Einsteins.
Veggietales is geared to teach morals and values in a fun way utilizing Vegetables.
Little Einsteins is amazingly educational and excellent for children because of it's sense of tranquility.
I've seen many toddlers in my family enjoy dvd's and toys from these two groups.
(I WISH I WAS 2 AGAIN!)

My 22 month old loves Dora stuff...if you want to buy her clothes, because that is a useful gift, buy something with Dora on it and you will make her and her parents happy.
Books also make a great gift.
My sister just sent my daughter a cloth tea set from Lillian Vernon and she just loves it. Here is a link.

my 2 year old loves dolls, dress up clothes, purses, jewelry, lip gloss, loves care bears and dora. things that you can put stuff in, strollers, shopping carts, bags. at 2 they pretty much just love opening things. i would get her a purse or bag that she can carry around like mom and fill it with little things. my daughter would love that.
