I have a 91 Crown Vic station wagon I want to sell (and someone wants to buy). It has been sitting for about 4 years. It failed it's last smog partly due to a faulty computer, which is why I never fixed it. I don't want to fix it now, but CA DMV website implies it's the seller's responsibility to get one. How do sell this beast (to someone who wants it) without paying thousands in repairs?

You might want to donate it instead.

Legally, you don't.

But look into some loopholes. There used to be a waiver clause that circumvented the requirement if repairs cost more than $50. I think that may have gone up. Talk to DMV about it. There's also certification shops that are a little shady, if you catch the drift. Ask around and see if anyone knows about one. I've also heard that some cities/counties are not as strict about testing. If I recall, Santa Barbara is one.

Perhaps you could work out a deal with the buyer about sharing repair costs.

Have heard that lack of understanding of a regulation does no longer launch you from the outcomes. i imagine he receives the 4,six hundred. it would want to be more effective efficient to provide it to him and settle it out of court. in case you've been him, how might want to you sense? referred to as do unto others as you may want to have them do unto you. also, are you both in charge of fraud adversarial to the state for tax evasion? have you ever checked the penalty if got here across in charge and also you recognize which will be an difficulty in court. go back the money, get the vehicle back, fix the smog and promote it back. possibly for a touch more effective to assist hide smog. in case you knew the smog grow to be undesirable or doesn't bypass, then you definately were decrease than common in the start and curiously like it did not workout routine properly. good luck to you, wish this helps.
