Teachers SHOULD tell students that they won't ever amount to anything....IF they continue their self-destructive behavior. There's nothing wrong with helping someone see the truth. The adults in a child's life should do their best to make sure that child doesn't fail (in life, not just the class). If the student is seriously depressed and has no interests, then a counselor and/or psychologist should be brought in to support that child's needs. Hopefully the teacher has already done this. Like I said though, there's nothing wrong with speaking the truth, even if it's not what a person wants to hear.

Your responsibility as a teacher is to be a direct conduit of information to the student. Your actions and presentation of information are processed and forever change your student's perceptions of the world, not to mention your own. You position infers that your have a superior wisdom and are trying to enlighten students to that wisdom; how to function in the real world. You will either help or hinder that intent by your actions. Always keep be empathetic to the students, compassionate, and patient. Think how you were at that time in your life and attempt to bestow a better condition on the student then you had. Always remember to be patient and that these students don't know who or what they are yet. Don't force your students to be less pessamistic, guide them. Play games, enliven and enrich their lives. Show them the beauty of complexityand our understanding of it (epistemology). Anyways, hope this helped and wasn't too vauge.

Not very good teachers. They should always be supportive, and positive.
