Hey Cindy,
I was also raised in a family of Hardshell Baptists or, as they prefer, Old School Baptists. I remember going to church with my grandpa and Grandma in West Virginia. We sang hymns but had no organ or piano. They do not use instruments for hymns or religious songs. Also, I remember they did something called feet washing, where the members washed each others feet. They believe in absolute predestination, which I also believe. I don't go to any church now, but, if I could find one here in Illinois, I would go try it again.

Hope that helps you.

WOW, a lot of people have the wrong idea about hardshell baptists. They are NOT hellfire and brimstone believers. They believe that God is in control and we do not have free will. All is planned as God intended.

WHAT IS MEANT BY "OLD SCHOOL BAPTISTS" OR "HARDSHELLS"?

These terms were given to Primitive Baptists after the division among Baptists in 1832. The term Old School does not refer to a college or university, but to a school of thought or belief. The missionary Baptists were referred to as New School because of their new beliefs. The term Hardshell is a colloquial expression given to Primitive Baptists in certain sections. Ideas about the origin of this term vary. Some believe it is derived from the emphasis that Primitive Baptist preachers placed on the "shalls" of the Bible. They emphasized greatly the word shall as in "All that the Father giveth me shall come to me" (John 6:37). Eventually the expression hard shall changed to the term Hardshells.

Baptists who are the far right wing of the Baptist churches.

Pat Robertson is too liberal for hard shell Baptists.

The term "Hardshell Baptist" was commonly used when I was growing up and it refers to extremely rigid Baptists who claim to literally follow the bible. No smoking, drinking, dancing, nightclubs, movies, entertainment, smiling, laughing, joking, singing other than hymns or anything else that would be considered "earthly pleasures."

They are extremely hardcore and are the kind of people you would not want to invite to a party. Or anywhere else.

Babtists are a christian Community following certain rules which they think are indispensable to follow Jesus Christ. The Name comes from their believing that babies are not aware enough to get christened. For christening, they enter a river and plunge their whole body in it as people did when babtised by St. John, the prophet who babtised Jesus as well in the Jordan river.
'Hardshell' is probably synonym to hardcore which means strictly following the rules, with a tendency towards intolerance against lapses, omissions and offences.
