Engine makes a big difference...

First, a thought. Sometimes people can get in WAY over their heads - this might be one of those cases.

You need to pull the oil pan, which may also include taking the engine mounts loose and jacking the engine up so the pan can clear the crossmember. VERY DANGEROUS for the layman.

Once the pan is off, the thing hanging down into the pan is the oil pickup tube, which attaches directly to the oil pump. The pump can be held on with a variety of bolts, and usually has a shaft that goes on up into the distributor. Remove the pump, put the new one on (make sure to reinstall the shaft), reinstall the pan, reattach the engine mounts, fill with fresh oil, and change the filter.
