It means 'thank you, friend'. It began being used widely when Essex boys began entering brokerages and financial offices in the early '80's.

Cheers means thank you. Mate is a word for someone you like. It's a cooler way of saying 'thank you my friend'.

Well 'cheers' is a sign of good health or thank you, 'mate' means friend, if it was in a pub they were probably wishing each other good health.
