I have a couple of middle aged dogs that live with me in my home with a yard. They have free run of this yard to potty whereever they want. My girlfriend and I want to live together in her place which has a smallish patio. I have had my dogs there before and the smell of the urine really bothers my GF, even if it is hosed off daily. So that is why I'd like to know if it is possible to get a dog to urinate or poo in a place that would contain the smell, kind of like a litter box.

Yes, but it will take a lot of patience and encouragement. When your dogs need to go to the bathroom, you will have to escort them and keep them in the area you want them to use.

Why can't you both live at your place instead?? That way the dog pooh want bother her!!! Dogs don't use a litter pan!! If taken outside then they need to go in the grass!! You will have to walk them everytime they need to go!!! I wouldn't let my dog go own the patio, it will get in the wood and the dogs will always smell it and want to go there all the time!!! They need a yard if there not house broken! My insidedogs go on newspaper in the Laundery room and i clean it up after they go! I mop it with bleach water, the only thing that kills the smell ! but my dogs are small, so a big dog has to be taken outside to potty!! good luck!!

Yes, it is possible. Be aware that, as with any habit, the longer it has been practiced the more difficult it will be to replace. Also, the more different the new behavior, the more difficult. So, if they are used to eliminating on grass, a surface similar to grass will make the job easier. If you decide to train them to a litter box, I suggest getting pieces of sod or growing kitty greens in the box. You can eventually slowly replace these with litter. You may also need to start with a very shallow box as the dogs are not used to stepping into something to eliminate.

To train them, bring them on leash to the new spot. Keep them there for 5 to 10 minutes. Encourage them to relieve themselves (if they already go on cue you will have quicker results) but don't chat to them the whole time - this will distract them. When they go, praise them and give them treats. If they don't go, watch them very closely or confine them. Try again in half an hour or so, or take them to the box when they show signs of needing to eliminate. Preventing accidents is crucial. If they have no opportunities to pee and poop anywhere other than the litter box they'll get the hang of it soon enough.

Good luck!

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://bitly.im/aL1Ec

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

it can be done but the dogs are not going to respond very well because they are accustomed to a huge opened space and now you are ready to convert them to something smaller where they are not going to be able to run free. This will cause them to become depressed and they really will be pooing and peeing all over the place so I dont think that it would be a good idea for them. It is going to be hard really hard for you to do that

If you take your dog to the same place all the time it is possible to train the dog but you have to work together doing the same thing in order for it to be successful. No slip ups that make it easy to just turn the dog loose while you watch. You have to be consistant.

Might I ask, if you have two dogs, why would you move to a place that has less space for them? My husband and I are looking at houses, but we are looking for something with room for our dogs. I'm sorry I'm not answering your question, but I want to warn you, having a smaller yard would mean more walking the dogs for you.

If you have 2 dogs - probably Not! Because they are marking
territory over each others markings. I know what your GF means
- my male pit has got some STINKING urine.
He follows my female and pees everywhere she does....
It's so DOG like! haha - I'm just glad they don't do it inside!
...and also they are both "FIXED"... so that ain't it.

Probably not.. And really, is the gf REALLY worth it? Sounds like she is going to eventually bully you into giving up the dogs.."mark my words"!!

Why can't you 2 live at your place with more room?

There's an old adage that stipulates "you can't teach an old dog new tricks".
I think you can teach him. I've always been one for starting a new trend just so I can say I told ja so.
Good Luck!
