First I mailed the letter back saying that I had to go to school, but my request was denied. But I will be traveling and studying out of the country in 4 weeks, which means that even if I show up for jury duty, I will not be abe to finish it before I leave. Then I called the office at the number provided, it was automatic and the only option I had was to postpone the date. The new date had to be 6 month or less (I will be abroad for a year). I realle dont know what to do. Should I write another letter to them to explain the situation (will they grant it) or should I set up a postponed date and see what happens next? Please help me!!!

You need to keep calling until you get an actual person on the phone. Due to your circumstances they should be able to put it off for 18 months (depending on the state too). Whatever you do, don't just not show up as they will issue a warrant for your arrest.

If you write another letter, include all of the information: flights, dates gone, itinerary, what you are doing, and when you will return and be ready to serve again. Be sure to make copies of all papers and do not send originals. Then make certain you send the letter via certified mail to ensure it reaches its destination and they can't claim that it wasn't recieved. Then call the courthouse a few days later to confirm receipt and follow up on the solution.

Postpone for six months and write a letter to your Congressman, copy the Governor, your County Board of Supervisors, the County Sheriff, and anyone else in a decisionmaking capacity in your county.

Dear Sir:
I am unable to serve jury duty in County X due to overseas schooling commitments. Attached is a copy of my acceptance letter. It would be most helpful if I did not receive jury duty notices during this time. I will be pleased to serve jury duty from [date].

I can be reached c/o [bursar, overseas college, college address]. Thank you.

Sincerely,
You

Why are you asking us? You need to tell them your situation, ask them to CHANGE YOUR DATE, then if they refuse you have three choices:

1) Ignore the summons, which many people do with usually no result but you could be charged with a crime if you do this so I don't advise it.

2) Change your plans and show up for jury duty. Many people who do get dismisse dwithin hours.

3) Keep trying to work it out with them until you have to make one of the choices above.

We really can't help you with this - it's your baby and your call.

Show up for Jury Duty. You will have a chance to speak to the judge before empaneling begins to explain your "hardship" and request to be excused.

You may not have to go anyway....most jurists have to call the court number the night before to see if their panel will be called in for possible jury selection.

try to call them again or write another letter explaining the situation. if that doesn't work then try to postpone it again. they are not supposed to make you serve jury duty if you are in school. that is a reasonable excuse to get out of it.

Tell them you are a socialist and that you don't believe in the fairness of the judicial system of the fascist, imperialist state, you'll be dismissed so fast your head will spin.

ignore it.

They won't arrest you for missing, they will send you a new date.

but goose and tonics answer was probably better than mine. Goose should switch to belvedere, its better, and its not made in france.
