I have it on some authority that the SAS are the best, them being essentially 'programmed' to accomplish their objectives without pity or fear or remorse. Look at Sir Ranulph Fiennes, who at the age of 63 completed 7 26 mile marathons in seven days in seven different continents !!!????!!!
And after his second un aided polar expedition returned to England and cut his own frostbitten fingers and toes off with a hand saw!!!!

There is the ELITE, HIGHLY TRAINED, HIGHLY MOTIVATED, THE ONE, THE ONLY, THE FEW, THE PROUD, THE UNITED STATES MARINES.
America's 911 force. when it absolutly must be destroyed in 30 minutes.
The Marines I have seen around the world have the cleanest bodies, the filthiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest morals of any group of animals I have ever seen. Thank God for the United States Marine Corps!
Eleanor Roosevelt, First Lady of the United States, 1945
Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference in the world. But, the Marines don't have that problem.
Ronald Reagan, President of the United States; 1985
They told (us) to open up the Embassy, "we'll blow you away." And then they looked up and saw the Marines on the roof with these really big guns, and they said in Somali, "Igaralli ahow," which means "Excuse me, I didn't mean it, my mistake".
Karen Aquilar, in the U.S. Embassy; Mogadishu, Somalia, 1991
There are only two kinds of people that understand Marines: Marines and the enemy. Everyone else has a second-hand opinion.
Gen. William Thornson, U.S. Army

This question is all a matter of perspective; For example which is the quicker car, Aston Martin Vanquish or Lotus Elise, “The Aston” I here you all say, but this is questionably. The Aston would wipe the floor with the Lotus on a 1/4 mile straight but put them on a short twisting track and the Lotus would be first over the finish line; Its horses for courses. In that respect if your talking about Urban then its the Israel’s or the Para’s(with 30yrs NI experience) if your looking at Jungle then your looking at the US Marines, but the RAF Regiment has got a pretty good specialist unit. If you’re talking about Mountain warfare then there is none better than the Norwegians, for sheer never give up never surrender guts till the end then there is not many better fighters than the Ghurkhas. If its all out war on the plains of western Europe then the US 101st Airborne would kick a**e but like the Aston costs a fortune to run, but I think that the most Important Question to ask is Dollar for Dollar, Pound for Pound what is the most effective fighting force and with out a doubt that’s the SAS manly because they’re run on a shoe string with out of date equipment and little resources (much like the rest of the British forces)

Since there are so many different types of Army units, including specialized groups, there is no way that any unit can be classified as the best. A unit can be classed as the best in a particular function but not as the best in every function.
A Special Force can be great in its trained function and lousy in some other.
Do you think that an airborne infantry unit can be better than a hospital surgical unit if the mission is to perform surgery on wounded soldiers? How about an Administrative Unit trying to do under-water demolitions.?

Well, someone said that the Israeli special forces are the best at urban warfare, that may be so, but the SAS do not specialise in urban warfare and are unlikely to take part in that. The SAS specialise in long range, behind enemy lines recon, intelligence gathering and "hit and run" sabotage missions, which is what they were set up for in WW2. They are the best in the world for this, bar none, it is a consensus amongst almost all militaries in the world. Iraq showed us this. Even the US army wishes they had the SAS, which is why they are often sent on dangerous missions before their US counterparts, especially when the mission is of some importance.
They always prove themselves to be the best, with the toughest selection process anywere in the world, as well as the "spirit" of an SAS man. Many special forces do not consider the spirit of the man, simply their mental and physical abilities. That is why they ae not, and never will be, the best.
During the first Gulf War, when "Chris Ryan" walked to freedom, he gave a talk to the American special forces that were going in to Iraq. They proudly, and arrogantly, told him that there men had escaped and evaded for "2 hours and 7 hours". When he told them his story, they stood up and applauded. That is from the americans. That shows you that the SAS are the best in the world, surely!
Someone also mentioned that the "toys" are more important than training. Ask any service man that and they will sniff at it. It is rubbish. A missile may blow up a building, but if you want the person alive, the highly trained unit of crack sldiers are your best bet over the average unit with lots of technology. A Para with a pistol is more dangerous than a civilian with an SA80. Remember, it aint always about killing the enemy, intelligence gathering is just as important.

As a Belgian so I should be neutral. Without any doubt, I say the SAS is the best.
A lot of you speak from the American SF. They are good fighters but being a good fighter is not enough to be the best. Problem is that their general background is too much "American only".
No offence but a broad general background of other cultures make you beter for special missions and that little difference makes that the SAS is more dangerous.
Second I should say the French Foreign Legion (especially because this unit has a huge expertise due to the soldiers that originate from many countries).
After that come a lot of good units, like Green Berets, Seals, Spetznaz, Gurkhas (good fighters) ... and even the Recce unit of the Belgian Para-Commando (not well known in other countries but with a good expertise of Africa).
By the way the Belgian Para-Commando unit originates from the WW2 British SAS (5th SAS Belgian unit) and not from the paratroopers. (with a background like that you ought to be good ;-)

There are alot of good units, gurkhas, S.A.S, Green beras, French foriegn legion. But sadly, it's not all abou training today, its the toys. A more well equiped person with better technology will beat a person with more training, easily. Ground soliders don't mean squat if they are incenerated before they even get their rifles ready.
