Hi there, I live in an apartment, and have a Shih Tzu. He is sooooo an inside dog, he hates being outside. I have to pratically force him to go on walks lol. He only barks when he sees someone walking by our window (which doesn't happen very often) or when someone knocks and rings the bell. He doesn't shed which is great as well. At my complex, i've also seen daschunds (weiner dogs), toy yorkies, one lady has 2 pugs, and there are a few couples that have the bigger dogs, but I wouldn't recommend that, i'd feel guilty that they don't have more room to run around. So I suggest a small one, say under 30 pounds. From there it will have to be an owner/personality match so go to your local ASPCA or go to http://www.petfinder.org and look for a pet in your area. Good luck and I hope you find the perfect match!

Don't write off the larger dogs just because you have a smaller space. With 1 or 2 walks a day, some of the more laid-back large breeds do great in apartments. I have two large scent hounds (bloodhound and coonhound) and they'd be fine in an apartment because they mostly just lay around until it's time for their walks.

A chihuahua. I have one and they're so low maintance. they get all their exercise from running around the apartment. If you socialize them well when they're little, they don't bark and are ver friendly. You can also train a chihuahua to go to the bathroom on a "pee pad" or outside. I chose to train mine to go outside and it was wayy easier than training any of the labs that i've had. Also they're great cuddle dogs. They'll sleep in your bed with you, if you let em, don't eat much food, and are too tiny to tear anything up or cause damage. all of my past and present landlords have had a strict no dogs/animals rule, but all have made exceptions once they see how little my chi is. honestly, they are an awesome dog. They're really smart and super loving and loyal. I would definately recommend getting one!

Retired racing greyhounds do well in small spaces. Contrary to popular belief they need very little excersise - they are sprinters. They have short bursts of energy and then sleep. Because of this they earned the nickname "the 45mph couch potato". Overall they can sleep from 18-20 hours per day. They do enjoy running but don't need to do it daily (really they can't do it everyday). Two short leash walks per day can provide them all the excersise they need, plus several other trips outside for potty breaks. The kind you win at a carnival that are stuffed with cotton. I hate to see even small dogs cooped up. If you must get a dog, large or small, please walk it often. I beleive if you give it plenty of exercise it could have a good life, but having a dog in such a small space puts more stress on you to give it exercise. Please just be ready.

Most toy breeds would be good since they are so small they don't require much exercise. I have a Yorkie/Chihuahua and just running around the house playing tires her out.

small dog, like a shih tzu or a multisse something smaller than a foot high. they are easier to train and they wont mind the small space.

A miniature Schnauzer. They can take care of themselves when you're at work, and don't shed at all.

Dachshunds are good too. I love my Heidi.
