It's called "freedom of expression", dear. And you, in turn, have the freedom to ignore it.
I believe the Christian thing to do here is turn the other cheek and live and let live.

Right on sista!!! One reason is because alot of them are so used to hearing it or saying it that it's kinda an automatic response to them. they do it without even thinking about it. That, or they can't or probably don't take the time to think up alternative words, because they're lazy or not creative enough. If they are used to hearing swear words all over, and they don't have the discipline to controll what they say, then a cuss word just comes out. I'm used to hearing them all the time at school, but i don't say them unless i'm really really mad. you really can't hold non-Christians accountable for their actions because they don' t have the same "rule system" that Christians have. If you hear a Christian cuss, then you can be like "what's all that about? You're not suppose to cuss!" Otherwise, you kinda just have to ignore it, and not make using those words a habit yourself.

Short answer: people who can neither control their emotions nor express themselves any other way must use the tools they have available. If 'bad words' are all that they have, then that is what they will use.
Medium answer: Currently, most societies with access to modern communication (and even, to a lesser extent, more primitive media like books, magazines, and audio recording media) are going through a period of re-prioritizing. It is now more important for people to express themselves, rather than repressing their thoughts and feelings in order to fit in and maintain the status quo. We have learned, painfully, that Victorian prudishness (i.e., ignoring a problem in the name of worrying about social standing and steadfastly refusing to actually deal with it unless and until all other options have been eliminated) is not the answer to society's woes. Exploring better options (what with global warming and all) has become less and less of an effete philosophical game and more and more of a matter of human survival.
Long answer: A piece of it is the simple fact that we're living in the One-and-Twenty, part and parcel of which is a flow of information that runs faster, stretches further and is more freely available than at any previous time in recorded human history. Were I to be at my winter home (a mountain redoubt somewhere in the South Pacific) with no direct land-line to anywhere else in the world, I could still access satellite datalinks that could put me in real-time video/audio communication with anyone in the same hemisphere. If I wish to narrow my bandwidth requirements, I can access standard Internet web pages or blogs in a matter of seconds.
This applies to your question thus: while the many cultures on Spaceship Earth give rise to concepts and emotional reactions that do not translate well, certain fundamentals remain constant. These generally include fear, anger, sexual arousal, and a dualistic appraisal of worthwhile/worthless. Thus, it is highly likely that the local term for 'solid human bodily waste' can be used to describe anything that the speaker considers worthless. "Bad words" and general tone can communicate these basic (read: "base") emotional truths with a succinct clarity that simply isn't possible for more abstract concepts.

What makes the words bad? Why is "shoot" not a bad word, but replace the "oo" with the letter "i," and it becomes a bad word?
We, people, have defined certain sounds as "bad," or "curses." We decided that "damn" was the worst thing you could say around the 1700's. Now, it is commonplace.
Also remember, that "merde" does not sound like a bad word...unless you know French. "Sterecus" does not sound like a bad word...unless you know Latin. Get the point?
As to WHY do people say these bad words? An old quote comes to mind:
"Swearing is the feeble attempt of a weak mind to express itself forcefully." >author unknown<

Bad words are matter of interpretation...and for that matter some words that are used frequently today...such as...and this is a mild one....WENCH....is used to describe an female who is of bad character or low moral standing and in fact in the era of it's time a Wench was a simple waitress in a bar or tavern...if you interpret a word...which actually is just a sound...and it offends you....ignore it...people who curse a lot normally have low esteem of themselves and try to use cursing to make it appear as if they have strengths they do not....feel sorry for those that have that problem....for they know no better.

Because they're ignorant and when we come to know the Lord there is a change within us
1st Corinthians 1:4-5 "4 I always thank God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus. 5 For in him you have been enriched in every way—in all your speaking and in all your knowledge—"
It describes a different way of communicated and the knowledge we gain in the Lord as enrichment. Something of value. Anyone can cuss to sound cool, but what they don't understand is that they sound just as stupid as the rest of the world. When we have the Holy Spirit indwelling in us, the wisdom of God is revealled even in how we talk. The more we take in his word, the more we are going to emulate that and have it be a part of our normal day to day speech. It's pretty cool.

What does you being a Christian have to do with people cursing. I'm a Christian, I don't get offended when people curse. I did the same thing before I became a Christian. People say the F word. Get over it.

Words are not 'bad' per se. Only the intentions behind those words make it bad. And those intentions are driven by human nature. And it would take a leap of faith to connect bad words with being Christian?
One doesn't neccessarily make a good Christian just because they avoid bad words.

Because some people aren't educated enough to use more creative words to express themselves. They don't know how to use the dictionary.
Sadly they don't care what Christians think and it probably why they go out of their way to do it. But remember my Christian friend they will answer for EVERY WORD and every deed that they do or say.

Because America has relaxed its morals...
The Bible is against swearing.... "let your yes be yes and your no be no"- the Bible
This is an extremly complex question and yet simple at the same time....
Why do people sin? We have all fallen from God.... Jesus saved you and me... yet sometimes we still sin... we are not perfect yet... but we try to be more Christlike....
God bless you and yours.

Don't worry, Amy.
I think God can handle a few cuss words from time to time.
You really need to get a backbone and stop being so whimpy.
They're just words.
