It's not, if you're qualified. Contact your local workforce development center. They'll help you get trained, and even help find you a job. This is usually done for free, for single parents & low income families.

Also, a good temp agency will do this for you also. Temp agencies help you get trained for office jobs, and help recreate your resume.

Four possibilities maybe:

1) because you're not maximizing your search opportunities, and/or

2) you don't have the qualifications for what you're applying for, and/or

3) your work history, references and resume suck, and/or

4) when you get an opportunity to interview it's all about how you're a mom, how great it is, how committed to your family you are, you inflexible your schedule is, etc. Which would freak any employer out.

If it's only the "single mom" factor that you feel disqualifies you, then you might be stressing that you're a single mom too much.

The fact is, there's no legal reason for an employer to know if you even have kids, are married, etc. The only question they can ask to that point is if you have any personal, religious or health reasons why you cannot perform the duties as described. If you really ARE available from 9-5 you shouldn't be having a problem finding employment.

As sad as this sounds, it's typically because a lot of single moms do not have an education past high school. (I'm college educated and still can't find a job. Of course I live in a really small town that sucks, and I'm no longer a "single" mom.) I would suggest looking into local community colleges to get yourself a better education and to work on getting a career. Just a suggestion. Good luck!

Ive never had that problem. Where are you looking? And what kind of education do you have? You should be able to get a customer service, receptionist, or most office jobs. And those are normally m-f 8/9 - 4/5

Probably just the reputation most single moms have given employers. They probably think of single moms as women who can't hold onto men so they probably can't hold a job either.

I have a college education and it was hard for me. Companies do this on purpose because they do not want to worry about call offs, leaving early, etc. I know for a fact. I worked for a head hunting company. Companies are out for themselves. If you are lucky enough to find that will work with you....stay there!

Because most places don't like to hire women that have
children because they don't know if they have a permanent
babysitter or not and that you never know whenthey going to
have to leave work or something to go get there child or
something believe me I know I have one and you never know
when there going to get sick or if something is wrong thats why
if you do get a 9-5 job its best to try to hold on to it. Because it is
so hard to get a job or another one.
