I have a laptop which was bought with XP pre-installed (not bought second hand). I need to re-install but was not provided with recovery/installation disks for XP. I have tried to find the i386 directory to burn to DVD but no luck. Any ideas?

BTW I have my product code so I'm not trying to do anything illegal!

Try calling whoever you bought the computer from, or call Microsoft.

Hope this helps!

Writing i386 folder in to a DVD won't help you in re installing WindowsXP.

Contact Microsoft support service and tell your situation.

If you can find a WindowsXP installation CD from someone else, you can install from that CD but enter product key (for the moment). I think this method is legal too.

The company you purchased it from should provide you with an installation CD, unless they partitioned a recovery section on your hard drive, you won't find the installation files.

Windows XP usually comes with the program 'Software Repair Wizard'. This allows you to pick a past time when the computer was running correctly and reset the computer to such a date. This reset can also be undone if it does not help.

if you have the legit copy of xp then you should be able to boot with it and install that way or simply boot the laptop into dos mode and install it manually.

This is exactly the problem that is driving people to Linux. You might want to consider that.
