I think age has a lot to do with it, because your metabolism slows down. When I was 31, I fell into a depression and basically stopped eating. My frame became "skin & bones" (my husband's terminology). I lost so much body fat that laying on my side was painful - my hip bones felt like they were trying to poke through my skin.
Ten years later, depression never hits me anymore. But I'm over what's considered my ideal weight, and no matter what I do, I can't drop any. I've even tried keeping a food journal to monitor what I'm eating. Over a week's time where I never took in more than 800 calories a day, I actually gained a pound.
I never had this problem when I was young!

I guess I don't understand why you want to loose more weight. Many guys are comfortable at 185. If you are exercising as much as you say chances are the the majority of your weight is muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat. You probably built the majority of your muscle up in the army. It is also harder to lose muscle than fat.

You should do a body-content exam. Those are really cool and can let you know how much of your weight is fat, how much is muscle and how much is bone, etc.
That way you can really tell how much FAT to can lose, not just water, or even worse, muscle.
There are these special scales you can have at home that will tell you your body fat content. Those to me are a LOT more useful than the regular scale. Just knowing your total body weight is definitely not enough to tell if you are in shape or not.

yes, you'll always carry the weight of your internal organs, your bones, you muscles. don't get down to 148, cuz what was ok for a teenaged you isn't ok for you now. if you exercise too much and not eat enough, your body automatically assumes that you're in a famine and then makes for dam sure that you don't lose that weight. try different activities, cuz your body adapts. if you've always ran, sprint for a few minutes, and then slowly jog, mix it all up.

You sound like a smart guy and you probably know that you have to cut down on calories. The older you get the harder it is to lose weight, your metabolism slows down. Keep running and exercising, squash is a good fat burner, and keep playing basketball. If you don't see any change, go have your thyroid checked.

Well you're definitely not losing any muscle mass by running and playing basketball.... if you really want to lose weight, then you have to stop eating and exercising...which is not a very good idea.

well there is a set point theory that says just that. but in your case, the weight you gained was muscle! thats good! why would you want to lose it?
you should stop being so concerned with the # on the scale, you are already healthy and in great shape.

Yeah. It depends on your body fat your metabolic reaction. If your body can eat and use your food as energy fast, then the faster you will burn it off. The more you need energy the more it’s going to burn. Your body will stop burning fat when it detects that your body is being depleted of resources

what you need to do is stop excersising cause the more you do the more muscle you build and you'll actually get bigger. muscle turns into fat when it isnt used and you cant burn muscle so when you stop excerisisng your muscle turns into fat and thats when you should begin excersising again. when your muscle begins to turn to fat. theres also special K and anorexia
