Most people don't know as so many have explained. They see a cute little thing in the window and they never stop to think about why a 7 week old puppy is away from his parents and where his parents are and how he got in that window in the first place. PetStores are, of course, one of the leading problems.
But Ignorance runs deep... about 1/8 of all dogs sold in US newspapers are now being sold by brokers (and therefore major puppy mills.) A broker is generally the middle man between a puppy mill and a pet store, but they have realized that the pet store market is steadily declining as puppy mill awareness grows and have been recently capitalizing on a new market. They make more money selling in newspapers also, that $1,000 price tag you see on the border collie in the window is markup mainly by the pet store itself, the broker is likely to only be getting $150 on average per dog. Be weary when you buy a dog and the seller mentions price in the first 5 minutes, if they do that there is only two possibilities: they are a small time puppy mill and don't even know it or they are a broker with 8 adds in that newspaper and 35 more in surrounding areas.

people don't know about them till they but from one. they don't know what they are and all they want is a good family dog, but when it is to late and the dog is sick they can't do anything about the mill where they got the dog from. i think puppy mills should not be allowed in the state but i guess we have no say on this matter. i also think before they buy a puppy they should be educated on where is the best place to buy a puppy.

Because they don't know any better. They think that by going to a pet store, the puppy in the window has come from a proper breeder; little do they know that the people who are breeding these puppies parents are inhuman themselves. If only they know that rescue organizations have puppies as well as adult dogs, they might go there to get a dog, like I did, for both my puppies (within 3 months of each other, I got 2 puppies from the same rescue). There are also the local shelters. I wished that people who want a dog would research it a little bit more than the local pet store!!!

Most puppy mills sell to pet stores. So the future owners don't know the dogs history.
If the dogs are bought from a breeder. They bring the puppy to you. They are not going to take the buyer to his house of horrors. Then you have this cute little puppy shoved in your face and can't resist taking him home. And not thinking to ask to see the parents. In which if this is a true puppy mill they are sure to say no.
Example: I bought a pug puppy from a farm. When I arrived the pup was in the house waiting for me. House was very clean. I take all my new animals to the vet within 2 days. My vet examined the dog and said "Where did you get this dog?" I had learned bad news to follow coming from my vet.
She had three types of worms (was told she had been wormed) and she had ear mites real bad. He then asked if I was going to return her? I did not, treated her and kept her until she died of old age.

When I was working as a vet assistant we saw a lot of people who saw nothing wrong with puppy mills or didn't realize they had bought from one. They just wanted a "cute" puppy for as cheap as possible. Unfortunately, most of those cheap, cute puppies cost them a ton of money in the long run.

Most people truely don't realize they are.
Others don't want to believe it exists.
They think its a national chain petstore they can't be doing wrong. Petland is the worse they constantly support puppy mills. And Jacks Aquarium are horrible in the fact they support local back yard breeders.
PetSmart is the only national chain petstore that doesn't aid in the abuse of animals. All the stores are supposed to work with a rescue that is part of their "Petsmart Charities".

Our local was so awesome when we brought 20 Katrina dogs up they and their employees helped feed and walk and water and get vetting done. We had cages set up all over their store to maintain some order. They helped us in every way they could. They did get a lot of news coverage too, but they were truly there to help at 5 am when the trucks rolled in with the dogs.
Our petsmart has our home numbers incase someone finds something and calls them they call us at home to get the network started to find fosters and placement for stray pets.
We truely have to push rescue. Purebreds die everyday in shelters.

Either out of ignorance (it does take a little research to find out where puppies actually come from) or because they simply are selfish and don't care. They see a cute puppy and go "I want!" and don't care about the repurcussions.
I think a lot of time though it's because people just don't know. Tell everyone you know about it and tell all of them to tell everyone they know until the word is out and no one can claim they just didn't know.
