There are different classics for different ages. For a child it's "Where the Red Fern Grows" for teenager something like "To Kill a Mockingbird".

For an adult, any Charles Dickens books, Hemmingway, Poe, Thourough.

You could go to the library and ask the librarian...that's probably your best option.

I agree Watership Down by Richard Adams is awesome. Also:
Island of the Blue Dolphins, by Scott O'Dell
The Giver by Paul...somebody-or-other
My Side of the Mountain
She by H. Rider Haggard
Mysterious Island by Jules Verne
anything H.P. Lovecraft
Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain

Classics I do NOT recommend:
Dracula --- Geez, all they do is sit around and talk; gee, we're stupid. Why is Lucy so white? Duhr. Big red truck?

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne --- Yes, Captain Nemo, your submarine is cool. We get it now. Seriously. Yeah. Okay, it's a neat submarine!

The Time Machine by H.G. Wells --- oh, I'm going to the future. Oh, look a future-woman. I'm going to sleep with her! Oops, she's going to get eaten by the other humans. Too bad. Guess I'll go home now.

I'm sure you've already read the Jane Austens', have you read Jane Eyre? I loved this book, very very much. Also enjoyed Tom Jones
