My fiance and me are getting married in 9 months. The place we are getting married at says your officiant does your counciling, but what I'm asking is what is a good time frame to start and how many sessions should we go to?

Well..there are many different ways of doing premarital counseling.
THe first way is putting in the "required" time..whatever your officiant tells you to do. Usually, that is like 2 or 3 sessions.
The second way is to get premarital counseling on your own, to help you and your fiance work some things out before the wedding and get things off to a great start. I highly recommend this. Take some time and find some good counseling. Some counselors have workbooks that the couple works through with them...some counselors are more open and freer and basically ask questions and give instruction. The workbooks usually last about 9 weeks. The other type is something that you are your fiance could continue with even after marriage.

Best of luck to you!

We did ours about 5 months before getting married and it was about 5 sessions with 3 other couples.

Depends on the church guidelines &/or the officiant.
Check with him.
Some have you do just a few sessions.
One church has 2 hr. classes for 10 weeks at a cost of $350. And they will not marry you until the classes are completed.

So talk to your officiant and see what he advises. And see if it costs.

They'll go over your beliefs, your faith, the responsibilitites of marriage, your families, your background, how you fight, that sort of thing. Don't be concerned.

Start as soon as you get engaged. This gives you plenty of time, it is a good idea to finish the sessions before too close to the wedding. You are busy enough then anyway!

We just finished ours, and it was 4 weeks. We went through a friend of ours, who is a pastor, and was closer to use than the church we go to. We met at a local coffee shop about 3 months before out wedding for an hour each Monday.

She personalized it for us. It was wonderful. I suggest everyone does it like this. We all communicated and discussed two books, one sermon, and served together. We learned more about each other than I think we had ever know before.

Week 1: Gary Chapman's, "Five Love Languages"--about loving each other
Week 2: Sermon about "Wives be submissive to your husbands"--the mutual respect of husbands/wives as mentioned in the Bible
Week 3: Serving together at a homeless shelther--together we can do anything
Week 4: Dave Ramsey's, "Total Money Makeover"--you're a team now. Get ready for financial success!

It truly depends on the officiant - some do not require any counseling - some states give a discount for doing it on your marriage license. I would say no more than 3 times.

It is good to start even now. You can't have to much counseling. And also through your relationship you will be learning more and more about each other. things can be brought out in the open now and dealt with instead of waiting until after you are married and find out he really doesnt like sweet peas. Wishing you the best.

Contact your church - usually there are set times and number of sessions you need to go to - you don't usually have a choice.
