It means you dont have to set the camera yourself.

In older cameras you would have to set the apature (spelling?) and the speed to allow enough light at a certain speed to take a good picture.

In new cameras all of that is done for you, so there is no thinking involved....

At this setting the camera will automatically adjust settings for available light and so on. Get an SLR camera and practice setting the camera yourself. Everybody is going Digital but to learn photography it is useful to get to know how to set your camera yourself. It is a lot of fun and can make photography a wonderful hobby or even a career

Since you asked this question, I would have to guess you aren't old enough to remember when cameras didn't have exposure meters or, later, coupled exposure meters, which would automatically set the camera and lens to the right exposure setting, instead you had to do it manually.

Automatic Exposure means just what it says.
