There is blood in your inner ear that works kind of like a carpenters level and help you maintain your balance and prevent the spinning sensation about which you ask. I'm sure you've heard of a blood alcohol level? When you drink your blood is thinned out by the alcohol. Within your inner ear, that thinner blood sloshes around a little more than usual and it feel like you are spinning.

That is also why if you are laying down and you put foot on the floor you feel less like you are spinning. It gives your brain another point of reference to counteract what your ear is telling it.

Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant. If you drink enough, it literally puts parts of your brain to sleep and can also kill brain cells. It also affects your balance and your motor skills if you drink enough, and that's what's happening to the people who get a "spinning" sensation when they close their eyes or lay on their backs -- the alcohol is messing with their equilibrium.

I guess its just some of the effects from alcohol. I always would get that sensation when I used to drink. I don't drink anymore, now I just smoke cigarettes.
