Descartes' famous statement refers to one's awareness of one's own existence. By thinking, by being able to engage in cognitive thought processes, an individual exists independently of the world around him or her.

Rene Descartes, a philosopher, said that. He was doing an experiment where he doubted everything he possibly could, even the things he could see. He reasoned that he could be dreaming and so he couldn't be sure that anything was as he saw it or that anything or anyone existed. Then, he thought about his own existence, and he realized that he must exist, because if he didn't, then he wouldn't be able to wonder if he existed. Because philosophers back then wrote in Latin, he recorded this insight as "Cogito ergo sum," which means "I think therefore I am" in English. It DOES NOT mean that if you don't think you don't exist, or that other people necessarily exist just because they appear to think--they could still be figments of his imagination. But he knew that he, himself, existed only because he could think.
