Hair won't heal, your hair is dead cells so once it is split then that is it, it needs to be cut off or else it will just get worse, you can only prevent your hair from further damage.
I would recommend not using shampoo at all, and if using straighteners using a small amount of coconut oil on the hair beforehand to protect and condition.
I would also recommend looking into your diet as dry damaged hair can be a sign of poor nourishment, your hair is dead cells however it starts of as living cells within the folicle and so if your health is poor either through diet or other health problems this will effect the condition of your hair.
Shampoo strips your hair of its natural oils, the oils that are produced by your body to keep your scalp and hair healthy, if you go shampoo free your hair will be a lot healthier so look better, need cleaning less often and also be easier to manage, so in turn easier to straighten as well as helping prevent split-ends.
Shampoo is very harsh on your hair, this is why we have conditioner to cover the damage, and also why you need to wash your hair as often as you do because the oils from the conditioner don't last very long and need to be replenished, your hair can also get greasier quicker because your body has to compensate/over compensate for the loss of natural oils.
Shampoo also contains mineral oil which is a by-product of the distillation of gasoline from crude oil, it's added to create artificial shine by coating the hair, and this also makes your hair weaker and more prone to damage.
As well as this commercial shampoos contain all sorts of ingredients that are bad for your general health as well as the health of your hair, skin irritants and paraben’s.
If that's not enough then add to that the fact that shampoo is expensive and many manufacturers support unethical and cruel animal testing.
You can go shampoo-free, this allows for your natural oils produced by your scalp to care for your hair, making it less prone to breakage.
If you have curly hair you can just use conditioner on its own, natural conditioners such as those found at Lush or Neal's Yard would be best for your hair, but any conditioner will do. If not then you can use baking soda and apple cider vinegar.
Use one tablespoon of baking soda per one cup of warm water, some people use less, some use less water, it is all a matter of finding what works best for your hair and altering it for things like hair length, although you shouldn't use more baking soda as this will make your hair hard. Then use a mix of one part apple cider vinegar to ten parts water and use it as a rinse over your hair after you have used the baking soda and water mix to wash your hair with. You can also use a little bit of olive oil at the ends of your hair to help condition if you are prone to split ends.

Since hair is actually dead cells, there is no way to "repair" damage. Any shampoos claiming to fix split ends (like Pantene) usually contain a mild glue that makes hair feel smoother, temporarily. It will actually cause more damage in the long run. Your best bet would be a trim and a great conditioner. I recommend Kiwi shampoo and conditioner, which runs about $8 a bottle. If that's too high for you, a hot oil treatment (rinse well!) will feel great, and only cost about $2.

Oh, dear!
Sweetie: when hair is extremely dry or damaged, the only cure or repair is to, actually, cut it. However, there are some good products out there, at both professional and drugstore prices. I wonder what you mean by expensive? Is a $5.00 bottle of shampoo pricey or cheap for you? For example, if you get your hands on any of Paul Mitchell's conditioners: from the one called The Conditioner to the one called Super Charged Conditioner, they can go anywhere from $8.00 up to $12-15.00. Pantene's conditioners are quite good, but you must use a small amount; otherwise, they may weigh down your hair. As for shampoos. creamy, sometimes pearlized ones are best. Look into Dove's, Pantene's, and even Infusium 23. This last brand makes both regular and leave-in conditioners/reconstructors. You may also try hot oil treatments (VO-5 has them) and, if possible, lay off the flatirons and blowdryers for a while. Great looking hair comes at a price, hun. Products by Kerastase and Rene Furterer are Uber-expensive, but good. Suave, cheap as it may be, is not so great if your hair is as damaged as you say it is. I hope all this info helps.

Unfortunatly once you get a split end you cannot repair ir back to normal...... THe only way to rid yourself of those is a trim....However Ive found that Garnier Fructis Smooth and Sleek works fabulous on dry frizzy hair.... It hides the split ends well.... the shampoo and conditioner are less than 3 dollars each usually..... you can also try using thermasilk spray on treatment ( about 5-6 dollars) before using the blow dryer, straightener, etc...... good luck with your locks :)

I use to have dry, damaged hair. First thing you need to do is get Alberto V05 Hot Oil to repair your hair, Then to keep it smooth and healthy get Herbal Essence shampoo and conditioner. Finally get L'Oreal Paris Studio Line Hot Straight if you want to keep straightening your hair because it has heat protectors in it to keep your hair from getting damaged. These products cost about 10-15$ at Wal*Mart. Good Luck!

I'm sorry, hair is dead it cannot heal. The only living part of hair is the root, the rest is dead cells. Dead cells cannot replicate themselves so your hair cannot 'heal' the split ends.
All you can do is prevent the split ends forming the first place by using lots of creamy conditioner on the ends of your hair and letting your hair dry naturally as much as possible. You need to have the split ends cut off otherwise, the splits will travel further and further up each strand.

If you have split ends they will never repair, no matter what the advert says. Have your hair trimmed regualrly say 1/4 inch every six weeks, and buy Redken Shampoo and moisturiser. it works and does exactly what it says on the tin!
Very uncool to have split ends, better to chip away at them and buy the shampooo without the salt content that is mainly responsible for your split ends.
Redken Extreme on www.LookFantastic.com Good Luck!
