It really depends on the girl, I'd say... Is she outgoing? Shy? Are you in school? If so, is she popular? Punk? Normal-ish?
There are a lot of angles to look at when considering this question. We need details. :)
Judging on what little information you've said though, I'd say to think creatively. Think of something sweet that isn't always traditional. One cute thing (I'll never get over the adorableness of it) is to write a note and put it inside a gum wrapper that says something along the lines of, "Would you go out with me?" and you could leave your number in there too. Then, of course, give her the stick of gum! It's cute, admit it. ;)
Go with sweet. Funny's also a plus! Just don't go over the top like a 50-page love letter, don't seem like a stalker, and remember less is more. Word carefully, and best of luck to your friend! :D
