It's just a common phrase, when you hear enough people use it you just pick up on it. There is nothing to fear when you do not believe (as far as being struck down by lightning or going to hell for using his name in vain, whatever is suppose to happen if you do) so therefore using his name in vain is no biggie.
You don't have to believe to use common phrases. Haven't you heard the expression F*ck a duck, well same thing applies, does that mean just because you use the phrase that you actually run around doing that too ducks..... See my point

I didn't say "goddamn" or otherwise "take the Lord's name in vain" until after I left the church. Then I said those things a lot. It felt very liberating, like filing for divorce and taking the abusive creep's ring off.
By the way, I also refer to orgasm as "atheist prayer."
I am Pagan, not atheist, but I don't believe in the Bible's God.

It's called a figure of speech. When someone says "goodbye", it originally meant "God be with you", but nobody really even knows that these days. In this culture, it is common to say "God damn" or "Jesus Christ!" as an exclamation. It doesn't mean you actually wish some deity to come down and pull someone into Hell. It is just another relatively meaningless exclamation meant to convey surprise or alarm.

I think some do believe deep down inside. They just don't want to admit it. Perhaps your Ex was like this.
On the other hand, even atheists can say "Goodbye" without intending it to mean "May God be with ye".

You married him "once?" Does that mean you are no longer married to him? Is that okay in your club?
And if he doesn't believe in your "Lord," how can he take his name "in vain?"
They're only words. Lexicon. They hold no magic for me.

Not all atheists believe there is no God. Some deny Him knowing He is true, but hating Him and all that love Him. Others deny him due to lack of evidence.

it's just showing frustration. I do it all the time. You're not literally wishing god to damn someone. It's like saying "screw me sideways" it doesn't mean you actually want someone to do that.
